Oh I wish I was in...
Annatar
... the land of cotton
Farlas say Hi again to your Ma for me ;)
"It is the job of the president to lead the union. He felt they hadn't proven their case for rights for seccession."
It is the job of the President to lead the Union, but what if they dont want to be led?! Does the President not have his position based upon the will of the people. If the people of certain States no longer want to be part of the Union - who is the president to go against them as his power is based on their approval/recognition of his position?
I guess it is the job of the President to preserve the Union but would that not make him into a tyrant if he... she... tries to stop any state from leaving. Good reason or no good reason, the downside of democracy is the will of the people is never always wise. Yet a leader can not cherry pick what the people want, seeing as he owes the position he/she is in, to carrying out the peoples wishes.
"...He felt they hadn't proven their case for rights for seccession."
Does that mean Lincoln thought himself wiser than the people?
There is a fine line between leading/guiding a country and dictating to it.
Sic Semper Tyranis
Latin is in vogue these days :p
I dunno if what Lincoln done was totally Kosher, but still... tis a good thing he stood his ground.
See ye later :) Ash Nazg...
PS.
Captain Blackadder: That is the worst idea in the history of entertainment since Abraham Lincoln said, "I'm sick of kicking around the house all day, let's go take in a show."
PPS.
