Everett, Yeah I know we have a bad tendency to fall back into old habits o religion and politics but we can fight it. Besides people visit this site to read about Tolkien and they find us yammering on about the price of bread in outer mongolia (okay so we have never actually discussed it but tis only a matter of time)
About the Messenger to Erebor, yeah I figure it must have been a Ringwraith. For that matter does "Unfinished Tales" not say who it was?? Id be suprised if it didnt. Will check it out later...
About the Mouth claiming the Ring for himself, yeah I could see that would most probably happen. However if I was Sauron I would have backed the Messenger/Mouth up with a Wraith or three back in camp, (as foghorn leghorn would say) fo'such an eventuality. No one can command the Ring straight away, the Mouth would have to render it to Caesar immediately or else pay the price.
Why even think it could possibly be the Mouth?! How would Sauron play the game... a Wraith is a blatant threat - a weapon of war. The Mouth... wellll hes a bit more human :S (Ignoring the movie representaion of him)
So if you go to sell a lie of a tinklet and offer rewards it might be best to tone down the threat to get the buyer hooked.
But saying that, like you said Everett, its most probably Khamul.
