Da questions:
Who or what is Tom Bombadil?
Why does Arwen save Frodo and not Glorfindel?
Who is Glorfindel?
Are book elves more jolly than movie elves?
Da answers:
Tom Bombadil is not human, nor hobbit. He has been poking around Middle-earth since the elves awoke, and possibly before. Not much is told about him outside of the trilogy. Even the Silmarillion didn't say much to clear up the mystery of Tom Bombadil. He is curious in any event! There really isn't much of an answer for that question. Maybe someone else here can shed a little more light on him, but he's rather undefined.
I think the reason PJ had Arwen save Frodo and not Glorfy *ahem* Glorfindel (he hates it when I call him Glorfy. LOL!!!) is because he was looking for a way to introduce Arwen. He hacked out her appearance in the book at the banquet, so he had to make it up somehow. Although, I'm pretty sure Elrond wouldn't have in a thousand years let his precious Evenstar go out into the Wild with the Nine lurking about to save a halfling. Ring or no Ring!
There is some debate over who Glorfindel is. Two theories exist as to who he is. Some say he is the same Glorfindel that slew a balrog in the Second Age, died, and was sent back by the Valar to Middle-earth. Others say he is simply another great elven lord that happens to be named Glorfindel.
Yes, book elves are faaar more jovial than movie elves! Why PJ thought he had to make them so ridiculously serious is beyond me! In The Hobbit, they were sitting in the trees singing, "Tra-la-la-la-lally! The Valley is Jolly! HAHA!" and Legolas comes up with that utterly absurd theory about hobbits turning their arms into wings and flying into Fangorn while singing. Just like humans, elves can be happy :o) or serious :oI or sad :o(. Hehe! Havin' fun with the smilies!
Anywho... I'm sure there is homework somewhere I could be doing... and I best be doing it. Blaaaah.
Take care all! Namarie!
