Intelligence and Balrogs
Tomas Bergstrom
I've read a few postings about the balrogs and their intelligence. Everyone has assumed that power equals intelligence. That doesn't have to be true.
Gandalf was probably the wisest of the inhabitants of middle earth, maybe the wisest of all the ainur. "Wisest of the maiar was Olórin..." (from the valaquenta in the silmarillion). Manwë could see Illuvatar's purpose most clearly, but that doesn't mean he's the most wise in all matters.
Back to the balrogs. Just because they have much power doesn't mean they are any wise at all. Maybe they don't have to be very wise to break the spell Gandalf has cast to hold the door in Moria. Their power is indifferent to how smart they are. For example look at Tulkas he doesn't come across as very wise, but he is the greates vala in strength and prowess.
I hope that my point has come across. Would be glad to hear any coments.
