June 9, 2002 Peter Jackson's Idea of Arwen I think Peter Jackson did a great job with the time limit he had for the movie. In the book Frodo is not as terribly wounded as it is in the movie, but of course Peter Jackson had his reasons. The biggest thing is time. The book has it that Frodo is quite well for a time and they continue(Sam,Merry,Pippin,& Strider) to Rivendell together, but in the movie that would present a problem. I think he put Arwen in not just for the love story, but to condense the story. He made it that Arwen rides with Frodo to the river immediately after being stabbed and she is the one who commands the river to rise. The same thing goes with the removal of Tom Bombadil. I admit I do like Tom Bombadil but putting him in would just lengthen the movie and even sidetrack off the main conflict and plot. All in all, I think Peter Jackson handled it all very well. |
