June 10, 2002 Re: Novel Adaptations David and Thomas, I wholly agree with you. Although I am always up for an debate or argument about how things should have been done or which things were done well, the fact is that this movie represents a new standard for screen adaptations. NEVER have we seen a movie adapted from a book that follows the plots and characters so closely. Only comic book adaptations have come close - X-Men being the best example. Every other adaptation I've ever seen always greatly departs from the book, either completely changing characters' roles, deleting characters, changing the timeline, changing the plot, removing vast portions of plot, or all of the above. The most impressive thing about FOTR for me is that it is the first movie adaptation I've ever seen that can honestly be called "true to the original." I have a feeling TTT may not be so "true" to the book, but FOTR will go down in history for me, and will always be the first "true" book adaptation I've seen. How many times can I say "adaptation" and "true" in one posting? Maybe I should say it a couple more times for good measure: True adapation, the adaptation is true. |
