June 10, 2002 A Comment about Elves In response to your letter, Bob the Builder, When you said that the elves were portrayed too stern and serious and sad. We have to remember that the third age was the failing time of the elves, and they were departing over the seas at that time. Also after the Last alliance, and the fall of Gil-galad, there were many great elf-lords lost in the Battle when Sauron was deafeted. At the time of the war of the ring, Sauron was a threat to the elves because if he found the One, the possessers of the Three's hearts and minds would be known to him. And if it was destroyed, many fair things would pass away from Middle Earth forever. So if Sauron was defeated, then the only gain that the elves would have would be to be able to depart over the sea in safety. So really, the attitude of the elves was appropriate for the movie considering all that had been lost before and was know gone. In the FOTR, in the poen of the fall of Gil-galad, it said that his realm was the last that was fair and free. So it was reasonable that the elves would have been sad and serious seeing what Sauron was doing in Middle Earth and it could have been his victory and the elves would be trapped in Middle Earth and wouldn't be able to depart over the sea. Thanks for your time. |
