On Balrogs
Trey
To basically throw in what I have to say on two subjects I will try and be brief or at least clear.
Balrogs have to be intelligent creatures. How else could one have been the high-captain of Angband?(Gothmog)
However, I do not think the Balrog in the mines served Sauron. If it was I do not think the Orcs would have scattered at the sound of it coming. I think he was just a left over from Morgoth's days waiting for him to come back.
Now if the Balrog got a hold of the ring I would think he would have no clue of it's power and he would throw it down. Even if he did how would he fit it on? Big fingers small ring. Not to mention that it does not serve for himself but for Morgoth.
I definitely do not think the Balrog would just go off and attack something or somebody unless it was disturbed as was hinted about how the dwarves mined to deep.
Somebody said something about the Balrog and Gandalf fight. I think Gandalf is with out a doubt more powerful then the Balrog. If you read about the fight it was in pitch black and it says the balrog new the place by heart. Though I would not call the fight a win for anybody but a draw for they both die.
Oh and Smaug is obviously not under Sauron's control. Smaug thinks for himself though his thought is twisted by the ring.
Hope I was not too confusing.
