Re: Lotr and Christianity (Again)

Matt, did I in any way mention or even hint that Tolkien was writing allegories? If I did, D'oh! I'm very sorry, but I do know that Tolkien never ever wrote anything to be an allegory. And am I right in saying that he rather despised them?
Richard, I do realize that there are limits to the similarities. But when I started reading the Silmarillion, the first thing that popped up into my mind was how incredibly similar it was to the Bible. Same with C. S. Lewis' Magician's Nephew. It's quite possible that their faith wasn't the only thing that they based the books off of. Actually I'm quite sure of that. But, being a Christian all my life hasn't really helped the fact that I've only seen the Bible as a guide and a source of comfort, etc., and not a book of literature. So I wouldn't really know if people would turn to the Bible as a source of ideas if they weren't Christians, or if they study religion. Thanks for the insight though. It's making me think about my religion with a bit more of a non-Christian perspective.
Also, yes, religion has started many of the wars in the past, present, and yes you are probably right, future too (sadly). And most of that because they have misinterpreted the Bible and just because of human nature. (We mustn't forget that factor.) Misinterpretations have caused a lot of trouble, even amongst the church itself. There are a lot of things wrong with the church (catholic and Christian) because of it, and it really makes me sick. I've almost lost a lot of friends from the faith because of it, and have many friends who won't come near religion for the same reason. It rather sucks.

PS: Matt, and everyone thanks for your support! *grins madly* The only thing better than discussing Tolkien and religion is having people to back you up!
