Religion
Elbereth

Jon L., In response to your comment of that we don't know why God would stand back and let Adam and Eve be tempted and sin(Also, people don't have to submit to the temptation), In Christianity, God is a God who is in control but is going to let people choose what they do(He's not going to make them do it), so they can learn from their mistakes and to show to people that he gives them a choice of whether they're going to obey or not.

This also reminds me of when people ask why God would let september 11th happen. It's because basically we told him to get out of schools, public stuff, etc. And like the God he is he let us make the choice and stepped out of our lives like we asked him to. So his protection was gone and we wonder why?

I think that was what J.R.R. Tolkien was trying to show in his books, that he lets us make a choice and make mistakes, but still cares and is there for us. Ex: Like Gandalf when pippin looked into the seeing stone, Gandalf said, "The burned hand teaches best. After that, the advice about the fire goes to heart."

Thanks for your time and I hope I didn't offend anyone.
