July 2, 2002 Tolkien and Religion It seems obvious that Tolkien is not God, futhermore it is obvious that he is not a god. To try and explain his book in terms of religion and God has serious implications and hidden dangers. The Lord of the rings is a fantasy based on some level of reality taken from old Myths and tales that deal with the ever present topic of good and evil. This to can be taken from the stories of the bible, however it does not follow then that the lord of the rings is itself cloaked in the wisdom and richness of the teachings of many religions. To think that it does can lead to a crossing over of that fine line between reality and fantasy. Therefore i think we are all better off if we just except it for what it is and not go and complicate it as we have done to religion. so lets all K.I.S.S, that is Keep It Simple Stupid. |
