July 16, 2002 Perhaps a Book Spoiler So Beware! I thought I'd warn people who have not read the book first before I posed this statement. It deals with the ending of the ring. Gandalf said that Sauron was a fool, a wise fool for not allowing for the desire to destroy the ring. It is my contention that is was Gandalf not Sauron who was the fool, Sauron wisely judged the lure of the ring would be greater than any desire to do good. I'll admit it was a close thing but bottom line is Sauron was right and Gandalf was wrong, and it was only through plain ordinary luck that the ring was destroyed. Frodo claimed the ring as his own, but for Gollum, the Nazgul would have taken it from him and Sauron would have lived happily ever after. Instead Gollum takes one step back too far and it's all over. On a different matter I was wondering if I was the only person to think/imagine that if Frodo had become a wraith after Weathertop, would it have looked like 9 1/2 Ringwraiths? It's a strange and disturbing image! See you later :) |
