Some of the characters do seem a little young in the movie, but you have to remember that most of those characters have a much longer life span than what we are used to. Aragorn lives to over 200, so that doesn't really make 88 seem so old, and Hobbits live to over 100 years on a regular basis. Frodo was a middle aged hobbit in the book, but he was also described as a "well perserved" middle aged hobbit, because of the ring. The other hobbits are much younger than Frodo. I calculated their ages once, and none of them were over 40. I've forgotten the exact numbers, but Merry is only a couple of years older than Pippin (under 33), and I think that Samwise was 34. Considering that, I think that the casting was near perfect! (age-wise that is)
