Sauron's Stupidity
Elbereth

Hey Annatar, just cause Sauron was more power than Gandalf doesn't mean that he was better than him. Sauron may be the more powerful one, but he is also the less wise. For example, in the Return of the King, when Frodo was in Mount Doom and put on the ring, "And suddenly his own folly was laid bare before him and he realized the thread on which his doom now hung." Another words, he realized his stupidity of putting so much of his power into the making of the One Ring. Obviously, he didn't even think about what would happen to him if the ring was destroyed because he was so blinded by evil and greed that he thought everyone else would do the same thing with the Ring as he would and would never think of destroying it.

Gandalf was not as powerful as Sauron but was wiser. In the Silmarillion it says that Olorin(Gandalf) was the most wise of all Maia, including Sauron. He had the wisdom not to take the ring because he knew that it was altogether evil because it was made by Sauron, and had seen the consequences of trying to bear the Ring(like Isildur), or just desiring the Ring(like Saruman). Also note that in the The Two Towers, when he was talking to Aragorn, Legolas, and Gilmli in Fangorn, He comprehended what Sauron would think about what they would do with the Ring, and in the RotK, when the captains, kings, and lords had a meeting before the went to threaten Sauron before the Black Gate of Mordor.

So even though Sauron was more powerful and had the bigger Army, Gandalf the leader of Sauron's opposition, got the victory in the end. Remember, the people with the bigger guns don't win, its the people with the brains to outsmart them. And, Good always prevails over evil. Even though Evil may win some big battles, Good always win's the war.
