July 24, 2002 Will Invisiblity? Nope! Everyone seems to think that invisiblity that the ring confers is a result of willing it. I would have to strongly disagree for many reasons but one stands out nicely. When Smeagol found the ring and returned home he was suprised and delighted to find that he was invisible. He had not desired to be, nor had the thought entered his head. He wore the ring and lo and behold he was invisible. Another point is that to Will something from the ring and to get it requires strength to dominate the ring, to make it yours. Apart from Sauron only Frodo ever gained any amount of control over the ring, and that just before it inturn consumed him. About Elves living in both the physical world and the spirt (so do humans for that matter if you want to be picky - Body and Soul) it was my understanding it was only the Noldor that the spirt world was visible to because only they had lived in Valinor (Then lived in Middle-earth). About Sauron not being able to become invisible with the ring, why should a simple Hobbit have access to a power (invisiblity) and the ring maker himself not (ALL of the power of the ring was from Sauron so...). See you later :) |
