Invisibility, Gollum and Sauron
Loremaster

OK, first on the subject of gollum not willing the ring to make him invisible, we dont actually know if gollum wanted to be invisible or not, but my thoughts are that he just killed his best friend, he is probably contemplateing not going home, Assuradly he was the last to see his friend, so what would he village think if he came home and deagol didnt, and when he got home and found out he was not seen, the ring saw it a chance to make evil in its wearer. this is of course my theory, like i said we have no clear idea.

I think that refering to sauron as a great and burning eye was more of a mental thing, note the only time tolkien describes it as an eyeis when he is peering into whoevers mind, frodo's at Galadriels mirror, Pippin's at the palantir, so i think it is a mental representationof Saurons mind "gazeing" into your soul and body. Also i think sauron did hold a form, just not a physical form that man could see. note the Ringwraiths had a form that would not be seen by man without thier robes. But when Frodo crossed the spirit demension he could see that they were kings. So it is entirely possible for Sauron to hold a form (if only an eye and 2 hands maybe) in the spirit world. But the one thing that bound him to the physical world was the ring.

and on the newer fans subject i think we should give them a chance, although they are annoying (i remember one trying to tell me that gandalf had died permenantly) i think that they will learn.
