August 4, 2002 Eye of the Beholder Sorry, Jimeous, but I have to honestly say there is nothing in the letter you quoted that convinces me that the invisiblity power of the Ring in controllable. It does say that the effect is a 'subsidiary power', but that is what I've been saying all along - it is an effect the Ring has on mortals or those who do not dwell simultaneously in both the seen and unseen worlds. There is no reference in the quote you offered to suggest that Frodo could have not become invisible, only that this was not the primary purpose of the Ring. If there is a direct reference to Sauron or any other user being able to become invisible at will by the Ring's power, or for a mortal to wear their ring and remain visible, I have yet to see it. |
