August 10, 2002 Tolkien and Christianity Revisited Hello to all once again. It seems the whole Tolkien/Christianity/bible debate is still out there. I have said before and will say again "Tolkiens works are not Christian texts and should not be treated as such". In trying to compare Aragorn, Gandalf, or anyone else to Jesus Christ is nothing short of blasphemy. Tolkien wrote a deeply detailed fantasy world of the struggle between good and evil. He wrote of the passing of time and how things change. He wrote a wonderfull tale of how someone who went small and unnoticed until his actions changed history. Tolkien did not try to reinterpret, rewrite, or revise the bible. Some could easily compare his books to the bible, you could also easily compare some of the things he wrote about to what his country was experiencing during WWII. So please, once and for all, stop trying to put God into Tolkien. If Tolkien wanted it, he would have done it himself. Thank you for your time. |
