August 12, 2002 Frodo's Dancing Partner Schlauz, it appears that you were a little put off by my figure of speech when I said that Gollum was "dancing." I apologize. I assure you, it was only a figure of speech. It is quite obvious that Gollum was not dancing - there was no music. The purpose of my article was to clarify the fact that Gollum had not seen Frodo. He knew where he was, and rushed to the spot where he had last been. I beleive (sorry, again, I don't have the books with me so correct me if I'm wrong) there is a sentence or two about his arms waving around pawing at the air. For some reason I have that image in my head. If I'm right, this is the "searching" process gollum went through. Kind of like a cockroach using its feelers. Pip wrote a good article in which he mentions that Gollum had a good sense of smell and very adept hearing. Also remember he lived in a dark cave most of his life. He was used to finding things in the dark. He was used to finding things he couldn't see with his eyes, so naturally, even if I'm wrong about his waving arms, or his searching, it would have been easy for Gollum to find Frodo. That was the only point I wanted to make in my original post. |
