Curious George, there is a saying that goes something like this...A wise man is not one who knows all answers, but one who knows where to find them. At first I may have misunderstood your statement, and I may misunderstand your latest.

It seems like your are saying he was searching for Frodo. My understanding is he saw where Frodo put on the ring, rushed over and found him, where he wrestled with him while his hands searched for Frodo's hand. When he found it, he he held it, and bit off the finger. He knew almost exactly where Frodo would have been, besides, Frodo was on the brink of death, he couldn't have gone too far.

The third sentance of the paragraph where this happens, says (Sam saw) "Gollum on the edge of the abyss was fighting like a mad thing with an unseen foe."
It goes on to say about falling, dragging back, etc.
Hopefully this clears up your misperception.
