When I first read about the Silmarillion, I had mixed feelings about Glaurung. Was he a maiar? It says something about Morgoth taking evil spirits and giving it that form. Yet a maiar wouldn't need Morgoth to take on that form, it would be able to do it itself (Ungoliant). So, is Glaurung a maiar or not, and if not, where'd the evil spirit come from?
