Shire Post Party Date Fast Approaching

Mark your calendars for the big party to be held this September 21st. The year is SR 1402 (remember, we subtract 600 from the regular calendar) which is just one year after Bilbo's huge party and strange disappearance. But Tolkien tells us that Frodo continued the tradition, and that in 1402 he held The Hundredweight Feast in recognition of Bilbo's birthday. It is said that it rained drink and snowed food at that event, so we shall have our task set for us if we plan to emulate this!

But really, we will be hosting a large party here at our home on that day, with food and drink and games and music and camping and much fun, Everyone is invited. But for a certain few we have prepared a special invitation. These are already on their merry way through the Universal Postal Union and are expected to begin arriving at Australian and South Asian destinations within three weeks, and elswhere just a bit later. There were seventy paid reservations, and some anonymous donations to help pay for others. As the membership now tops 300 and the number of reservations was 155 (one gross plus another baker's dozen) that means that not everyone on the list could receive one. I made some arbitrary decisions and so a number of folks will be pleasantly surprised at receiving an invitation. The money will go to help pay for the bands and the catering. The invitations were prepared by an international team of volunteers this year, and will be entering the UPU mailstream from Wellington New Zealand, so they should be an interesting and collectible item, not to mention the inclusion of a new mathom!

We've got some plans for a major revision to the Shire Post website. Most of the work is done, but we want to go over all the link and make sure they're operative before putting up the new pages, not sure when that will get done.

The online store is back up after being down for several months, but we've got a lot better category control now. The primary items available at the store are still the coins, which now includes an Iron Crown from the reign of Morgoth in Angband and a copper Mumak from Far Harad in the far South East of Middle Earth. The coinage for The Shire is now nearly complete. The forthcoming brass half-penny (or "haypenny") and the gold half-crown (equivalent to twelve shillings) will fill it out nicely. The dies for those issues are being prepared now.
