Video, DVD Boost Rings Gold

Director Peter Jackson is expected to make another pot of gold from The Fellowship of the Ring when it is released on video and DVD in New Zealand from midnight.

Distributor Roadshow Entertainment is shipping 150,000 copies to stores and expects it to become New Zealand's biggest-selling video and DVD. It is also being released around the world.

Roadshow spokeswoman Carmel Bennett said one reason big sales were expected was that the movie was filmed in New Zealand and many people knew someone involved in it.

"Even if you live on a farm in the middle of Mt Cook you're probably two people away from knowing someone in that movie. My little brother was an extra," she said.

Video Association of New Zealand spokesman Bill Hood said the association expected sales to beat the three biggest-selling videos and DVDs in New Zealand to date - Shrek, The Lion King and Titanic. Each had sold about 100,000 copies.

The Fellowship of the Ring DVD included a second disc more than two hours long with several documentaries, other items and a 10-minute trailer for the second The Lord of the Rings film The Two Towers, which is due for release in December.
