Ice Age... in North Carolina
Matthew

I apologize for the lack of updates lately. The ice storm that moved through North Carolina last Wednesday evening and Thursday morning knocked out power to my area for over 3 days. Naturally, no power means no computer, thus the lack of news updates. Be assured that regular updates will resume immediately.

For those interested in news about the storm, it was bad. Many pine trees in our yard fell over. One fell across our driveway early Thursday morning. Fortunately, none hit the house, but some of our neighbors had trees hit their garages and vehicles. The whole place was a disaster area Thursday morning, with power lines draped across major roads and wrapped around downed trees.

With the power out for so long, and the night lows dipping down into the 20s and teens, the house got very, very cold. We finally just packed up and left town because the nights were so bad. There have been 27 deaths in the state due to the storm, with the majority of them due to car wrecks. Others were killed from carbon monoxide poisoning while trying to keep warm with a kerosene heater or a charcoal grill. Yes, it was so cold and folks were so desprerate for warmth that some took their grill inside their home and lit it.

Fortunately, my family had a small catalytic heater that runs on propane that we were able to use for a while, but that sucker sure won't heat an entire room with the temperature at 18 degrees outside! We were able to keep the temp in the house around 57 degrees for a while, but the second night the temp in the home went down to 54 and kept falling. That's when we decided to leave. Fortunately, the roads were passable by that time, although even today there are trees down all over the place.

We as a society take electricity for granted so often. Living without it for even a few days sure put things in perspective for me. When the power's out, you don't care about having a nice car or a nice computer or even a nice copy of FotR on DVD. Over 100,000 homes in North Carolina are still without power tonight. Some will be without power well into next week.

Anyway, we're all fine now (the power came back on Saturday evening) and, like I said, regular updates will commence immediately. Thanks for hanging tight.
