CBS IBM Touts Linux Tech in 'Rings' Films It's billed as a "significant win" for Big Blue as it continues pushing products linked to the operating system, now used mostly on mainframe computers. Wellington, New Zealand-based Weta Digital, Ltd. will move "a significant proportion" of production work related to two upcoming films based on the Tolkien trilogy. Under the deal, IBM (IBM: news, chart, profile) will supply Weta Digital with more than 150 workstations by the end of the year. Jon Labrie of Weta Digital, the company handling digital effects for the movies, said the shift to Linux will save money. Sunil Joshi, a regional manager for IBM in New Zealand, said the deal signals the tech giant's commitment to Linux. Weta won two Oscars earlier this year for its work on "Fellowship of the Ring." The next installment of the film trilogy is due out by the end of the year. Go to: CBS |
