Yes, Virginia, There Is a Gil-galad
John R.

In response to Virginia H., who inquires as to the reasons why Gil-Galad and Morwen are in LotR movies:

The LotR movie has to start somewhere. The book does not start with Bilbo and Frodo's birthday party, but with lengthy background information. So how should the movie start?

One logical starting point is with the battle at the end of the Second Age where Gil-Galad and Elendil die fighting Sauron. Isildur apparently strikes the fatal blow, and cuts the One Ring from Sauron's finger. (We might see Isildur's death, then Smeagol finding the ring and hiding under the mountains, then Bilbo finding the ring and riddles with Gollum.)

The movie-Morwen is probably not the First Age's Morwen. We know that Theoden's mother was Morwen, a kinswoman of Prince Imrahil, but it's hard to see how this Morwen fits into the movie either. The movie-Morwen is likely a new character with a bit part.
