I have to agree with Kevin MacL. that Peter Jackson has produced a variation on Tolkiens original story. In my humble opinion I believe that LOTR cannot be faithfully transferred from book to movie.

I am however, grateful that P.Jackson tried. His movie is not the true LOTR and it is not perfect even as a variation. But it is a very good movie that tells a story that so many of us love, and so many more should at least see. The movie cannot possibly convey the magic of the books, but at least it will give a small glimpse of Middle-Earth to those among us who have not read them.
