June 4, 2003 About Haldir and the Halls of Mandos In response your article, Piper, I read the article at Onering.net from June 1rst, and yah, I think that the viewers of the third movie would probably enjoy seeing Haldir again for a few fleeting seconds, but somehow, I personally don't think it's going to happen. Like, it might confuse people that don't know much of Middle-earth Lore, or if they haven't read the Silmarillion. And that also proves that elves indeed to go to the Halls of Mandos. I read an older post in which someone says that Elves die and kind of dissapear, and that it is Men who go to the Halls of Mandos, but I don't agree with that at all. I think that, indeed, when Elves die, they are sent to the Halls of Mandos to "rest" and are released back to Middle-Earth after a certain time. There are MANY quotes that support this, but the first that comes to mind (don't ask me why!) is in "Unfinished Tales", in the excellent story of Turin Turambar. Well I remember that when Turin was in Doriath, there was an elf that greatly antagonised him (I can't remember his name and it's making me mad!) and Turin chases him with a sword. So anyway, the elf ran off a cliff and was thus slain, and this resulted in the misunderstanding with Mablung was it and Turin's banishing. Anyhow, all that to say that Tolkien then added that Mandos did not release that annoying elf for a long time. So that proves that elves do indeed go to the Halls of Mandos and are eventually released. And in the Silmarillion, I think we can find some insight on the fate of men, and I know that their death is different from those of the Elves (it is the gift of Illuvatar) Anyhow, I could go on but this post is quite long, so could anyone help me out with that?
