In response to Rune's posting: the only recollection i have of Valar creating any "people" is when Aule created the Dwarves. This was apparently a big deal and Illuvitar himself sort of got upset and chewed Aule out.

Indeed the Silmarillion states that the Maiar were around before time, and you stated that the Valar created them to help out with earth. During the Music of Illuvitar, i understood there to be only Valar present. i doubt a discrepency in the story, but it seems to me that these maiar popped out of nowhere.
