Gandalf the Steward

Ashleigh, the word "steward" does not necessarily mean that someone is filling in for someone else. It also can mean "caretaker," and that is exactly what Gandalf is: he was sent by the Valar to protect the Free Peoples from the threat of Sauron; therefore he is the caretaker, or steward, of Middle-earth.
