Lem, you are right to say that Merry was still in the Houses of Healing during the final battle. Pippin was indeed the only hobbit representative. Merry being my favourite character in the book this actually annoyed me a little. I don't mind too much about Peter Jackson messing with most of the story but Merry and Pippin were perfect as they were. No need to change their stories in the slightest.
