December 31, 2007 Not Necessarily Good News Not to throw cold water on a hot story (at least not too much), but I'm actually a little concerned by the fact that they're looking to make two movies. The plot is linear enough that "The Hobbit" can be made into one movie, even if it would be on the long side if done well. I doubt there's enough there to make two decent movies, and I don't know just how much material there is that can tie "The Hobbit" to LotR more effectively than Tolkien does in the prologue to FotR. On the other hand, if they wanted to make a new movie taking off from the White Council driving the necromancer from Dol Guldur and chronicling Sauron's rise at Barad Dur, there is enough of a general plot outline and enough freedom in terms of details to make a pretty sweet movie. So, it's great that the major hurdles seem to have been cleared, but concerns remain. |
