Saruman's Downfall

I saw a still in one image gallery of what may have been Saruman spiked on a large wheel. The caption was something like 'real or fake'. Last night on British TV Ian McKellan was asked if he had ever been nailed to a plank ! His reply was that he had not but Sarumen suffered such a fate in the next film, the Two Towers ! This suggests that this image may indeed have been Saruman. Anyone any ideas?
