November 27, 2001Tolkien Auction at
Sotheby's
Press Release
The auction at Sotheby's London on 13 December 2001 will
include a fine collection of material by J.R.R. Tolkien.
Lots include autograph letters to his illustrator, Pauline Baynes, one of her drawings for
Smith of Wooton Major, and copies of The Hobbit in dust-jacket. There is also a set of
first edition copies of The Lord of the Rings inscribed by Tolkien and specially bound in
black morocco with the author's consent. This set presents new titles for the books, as
provided by Tolkien. A series of letters provides Tolkien's views on a radio adaptation of
The Lord of the Rings and details different titles for the work.
The illustrated catalogue is now published. I have provided
the text and
illustrations in an attachment below, for your possible interest. The
illustrations are rather low in definition.
